Jimmy Willing & The Real Gone Hick-Ups released their self-titled
debut album at The Rails, Byron Bay on Saturday 8th July,
A country folk band like no other, The Hick-Ups draw water from
the deep well of rural folk tradition and make it their own. Be
it rockabilly or a cranked up heel and toe polka, they are guaranteed
to kick up the dust.
Like an old time country band the songs on The Hick-Ups album were
recorded live with the band standing in a circle. Fracas Studios,
Byron Bay is in the Old Norco Factory and the boys put down their
stuff in the ham hanging room. Like I said, a real country record.
This album pulls you in and leads you through a swag of thirteen
songs, each one a story in itself the recordings have a strong sense
narative. There's a song about fishin' for catfish that features
the saucy vocals of Christa Hughes, a song about a love sick sailor;
a moving autobiographical song "That Big Man Broke Down and
Cried' and a song told through the eyes of a child, 'My Mother's
So Fancy' that features two of Willing' s daughters And of course,
there' s some good old-fashioned souped-up country swing and country
pop that will get everyone in the house moving.
The Hick-Ups are reminiscent of 1940's-50's country music acts.
Stripping things back to the bare necessities, The Hick-Ups convey
a simple honesty to their audience that is not present in much of
contemporary music.
